Lake Michigan of Chicago is one of the Great Lakes which takes its place on territory of the United States. It is very large and more like a sea than lake. The length of Lake Michigan is about 500 km long and the width is about 190 km. A surface height above sea level is 177 m, and depth is 281 m. This graceful and blue water lake is covered with snow for 4 months in a year. Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin have an access to the lake.

The name of Michigan comes from the word “mishigami”, from the language of the Indians it is translated as "big water". A Frenchman Jean Nicolet was the first European who opened it in 1634. Lake Michigan is the third largest lake of the well-known Great Lakes, there is continuous navigation. It is connected with Lake Huron through the Straits of Mackinac.
